The Mills House

The Mills house is in the heart of Charleston.  We received great customer during our stay.  Everyone was so welcoming and we always had someone closely if we needed extra towels, toiletries, etc. This hotel is truly the epitome of southern style!

The Mills House has a swimming pool, fitness center, valet parking, a nightly turndown service and daily paper! There most popular room is the poolside room which features an indoor and outdoor guest room with a private porch with a beautiful iron rail.

The Mills House gives you just the perfect view of the historic district and is so close to the main shopping street in Charleston, close to the market and within walking distance to any restaurant and historical spot in town.

Where To Eat

Millers All Day $$ (Breakfast)

If you're looking for a good breakfast place, this is a great option! The food is amazing and the portions are big! It's super family friendly and has homemade pastries too. Everyone who went got the Millers Plate which is two eggs, hash browns (best ever), bacon and biscuit (gf toast available).

Cupcake DownSouth $$

If you have a sweet tooth, you'll want to visit here! They make their cupcakes and deserts fresh on the daily and they try to use all natural ingredients. It's super convenient as it's located right in downtown on king street. AND they have gluten free and vegan cupcakes available each day.

Sticky Fingers $$

Sticky fingers is a great lunch or dinner option if you like ribs, wings and cue! The meat was seasoned just perfectly! I got pulled barbecue chicken with broccoli and Jordan got ribs, pulled pork, broccoli and a baked potato. They cook authentic Memphis style barbecue by slow cooking on-site over aged hickey wood- the taste is just SO good!

Mellow Mushroom $$

Mellow Mushroom is the place to go for the best pizza in town! It is located right on King street so super convenient to grab for a lunch or dinner. It is family friendly and locally owned. Jordan was able to get gluten free pizza which he loved and I got the BEST salad ever! Sandwiches are also an option.

Poogans Porch $$

Poogans Porch sounds quite like the name! It's an older southern restaurant located in the historic downtown that's well known for their brunch and dinner! As you walk in you can see along the wall all the famous celebrities, politicians and tourists that just rave about this place. They are well known for their homemade butter biscuits and their signature fried chicken. . You might be wondering what the name means..well it's a super interesting story and if you're into scary ones you'll for sure want to check it out! As for food intolerances, they don't have many options for gluten free.

R.B."s Seafood Restaurant

Now this restaurant isn't in downtown Charleston but, if you have a car and want to drive about 15 minutes you'll want to check this place out! You can sit out right in front of the water (Shem Creek) and enjoy great fresh seafood. The staff was super great and able to accommodate to Jordan's gluten allergy too. This was the day that we had a tropical storm so unfortunately I didn't take any pics.

Restaurants that were highly recommended to us but we didn't get to go to:

Husk

- Fig

- Toast

-Slightly North of Broad (SNOB)

Important Things To Know!

Do I Need A Car In Charleston?

The answer is yes and no. It's truly dependent on your agenda. We had a car for our trip. But, Charleston is very walk-able and if you're just going to tour the city you won't need a car. You'll love spending the day's walking on the cobblestone roads and seeing all the beautiful buildings. But, if you'd like to go explore Kiawah Island or Folly beach or different plantations like Boone that's when a car is necessary.

Best time of year to visit Charleston?

I went in the fall and LOVED it. I would recommend the spring or fall as the temps are just perfect!

What To Do

Shopping On Kings Street

King street is one of my favorite things about Charleston! It is just so beautiful and clean and has an expansive amount of stores ranging from designers like Louis Vuitton all the way through to smaller boutiques like DressUp! I highly recommend planning on spending at least part of your day walking this street and checking out the shops! There are lots of restaurant options located along this street too.

Rainbow Row

This street is most likely the most instagramable spot in Charleston! The row of homes (running from 83 to 107 East Bay Street) is one of the most beautiful and historic areas in all of Charleston! Being able to see these 14  bright pastel colored homes has been on my bucket list for quite some time now and it was so beautiful! This definitely was a highlight of my trip and an absolute must if you're in the city!

There are just SO many reasons to check out Boone hall, it's an absolute must. It is absolutely beautiful. The slave corridors and tour of the Boone mansion will give you a whole new appreciation for the rich history there. This plantation is one of the oldest growing plantations and is famously known for it's starring roles in the movie The Notebook, and Forrest Gump (the run, Forrest run scene!) Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds also got married here! Have I convinced you to check it out now? 😉

Historic Horse-drawn Carriage Tours

Taking the carriage rides is an excellent way to learn more about the history of the city and a lot of the mansions. These tours are super popular in downtown and you'll see them often throughout your day. They last for about an hour and a half.

You can board the Carolina Belle, which is Charlestons top rated Harbor tour. This is a great way to learn some history and learn the lay of the land. This tour was actually the first thing we did when we arrived in Charleston. Throughout the tour you'll learn about 75 different landmarks and points of interest, plus over 300 years of history! The tour lasts for about an hour and a half.

TIP: You can sign up here for the tri-combo tour (best value) which gives you access to the Harbor tour, Carriage Ride & Plantation tour!

This park is so pretty as it's right on the water and located at the start of where Battery Park begins. You'll come across the famous Pineapple fountain as well. I'd recommend doing Waterfront Park and Rainbow Row at a similar time as they are near each other!

River Street Charleston SC

This is one of the destinations you'll want a car! It is about 15-20 minutes drive from downtown. However, if it's during a busy season it can take upwards of 30 minutes.  Folly beach is the most popular beach in Charleston. So we actually stayed on Folly beach for two nights. Public restrooms are available here! This beach has a great pier, so if you are into fishing this is a great place. However, the beach did feel somewhat small and can get crowded. But, if you're looking for more of a party beach it's great.

Charleston is famously known to be the "holy city" and that is visible throughout the city by all the beautiful steeples and historic churches. While you're in the area there are definitely some you'll want to see as you're walking the streets! Some of the churches you're allowed to walk in while some you aren't.

The City Market

The city market is super neat to walk through. It is one the nations oldest public markets! When you walk through it there will be more than 300 vendors that you can walk to  and check out. This is a place where you can pick up a souvenir too. Along this road are a lot of candy shops too.

PS- If you're planning a trip to Charleston I'd highly recommend adding a 2 or 3 days to check out Savannah, Georgia! If you're interested in learning more about what to do, where to eat and stay in Savannah you can check out my travel guide!

Cayman Islands Travel Guide

The largest of the three Cayman islands is the Grand Cayman islands, hence the name! There is no denying it's a popular yet GORGEOUS destination to visit for a laid back beach vacation. Jordan and I went with my in laws for a week vacation in 2018 and had a great time. Now...Cayman islands is known to rarely get rain. Well, I must preface this post with how the weather went the week we visited...almost everyday we had torrential downpours and wind. Needless to say we did make the most of the trip and with the little pockets of sunshine we were out exploring and had a blast! Another huge blessing was we LOVED our hotel, so it made staying in at times not to bad. The Westin Grand Cayman Seven Mile Beach Resort & Spa definitely was on the top of the list of best hotels! This hotel is almost right in the middle of 7 Mile Beach which is the place to stay when you visit this island.
